As a trainer, it’s part of your role to get people in a receptive state for learning and to keep them engaged, interested and energised throughout the training.
There are lots of ways to do this, I won’t go into all of them here. Let me just talk about energisers.
Energisers are activities which are meant to, well – energise people.
Many of the activities which are described as energisers have nothing to do with the training material. In fact, that’s the point. One of the ways to energise people is to let them do something which has nothing to do with the course. It gives their minds a break.
Also, most energisers involve physical activity, getting people moving around.
This is important because sitting still for long periods leads to fatigue, simply because the blood isn’t flowing and carrying oxygen round the body as well as it does when people are moving around.
So, these are two approaches to energisers – get away from the course material and get people moving.
You can use a number of activities – throwing a ball around, a treasure hunt around the room where people find hidden items, a game of charades, all kinds of team games which you can find in books or on the internet.
However, I think you need to take care with energisers.
If you’re not careful, they can actually distract people and make it harder for you to get them focused back on the training. This can happen if they take too long or if they involve a lot of running about and people get “overexcited” as my Mother used to say. In other words, they get so involved in the energiser that they take a long time to settle again.
Also, it can be tempting to rely on energisers to make up for dull training materials or methods. Energisers should not be a substitute for making your training interactive and interesting.
You can, of course, use activities as part of the training itself – use games, quizzes, group work to get people moving around and inject some fun into the learning. Keep people energised throughout rather than leaving it for specific times, such as after lunch.
If you do get the sense at some point that energy is flagging, then change what you’re doing. Use variety in your approach to keep people’s interest and make sure everyone is involved in the learning, avoid too much presenting or lecturing which leads to people switching off.
I always remember a good example of an energiser going wrong from a course I ran several years ago. I asked one of the participants to come up with an energiser to use after lunch on the last day.
After everyone had finished eating, he asked them all to go outside to the car park. During lunch, he’d taken a screwdriver and removed the number plates from all the participants’ cars. He’d hidden them in the grounds of the hotel.
People went mad. They couldn’t believe he’d taken a screwdriver to their nice shiny cars and they weren’t pleased about having to search the grounds for their number plates. The activity took ages, especially since he’d forgotten where he’d put most of them.
When they had finally found their plates, it took a long time to get them focused again, in fact we had to have a break to let them calm down.
I learned a few lessons from that, I must say.
So, yes – keep people energised and watch out for fatigue setting in, but do it mainly through your training methods and don’t just rely on energisers to get you through the day.

Potty Training Puppy Now
Every pet owner has to potty train puppy. Setting up a routine is important when potty training puppy. Start immediately upon arriving home with puppy. Keep the potty training experience positive, don’t scold your puppy for mistakes, they don’t know what is right and what is wrong, unless you show them how to act. Scolding can cause fear, they will begin to associate you with a source of pain, instead praise puppy every time they do something good.
When potty training puppy, make sure you take puppy out often. Young pups have small bladders and need to be given plenty of opportunity to relieve themselves. When you take puppy out, make sure you take puppy to the same spot every time, wait patiently while puppy sniffs around and finds “the spot” Once puppy has started to potty, calmly praise them, when finished tell puppy “good potty” and give lots of love and praise. Let puppy know they did a good job and you are pleased. That’s all most of them want to do is please you.
The best way to avoid accidents is to keep puppy under constant supervision. Accidents can happen when potty training puppy, take it as a learning curve (for you and puppy). Teach your puppy to go outside. When you find a mess on the floor and didn’t catch puppy doing it, just clean it up and keep a closer eye on puppy, don’t scold them for a mess they did earlier, they just won’t understand what your upset about. If you catch them in the act, immediately say “no” and take puppy outside to complete the potty training.
Potty training puppy takes patience and commitment. Keep a positive attitude and praise puppy every time they do a good job, let them know you are pleased. With a well established routine, your puppy will be trained in no time.

Whistle Away Your Anxiety!
Forgive me if I reminisce a little!
The other day I heard a song that I’d not heard for ages. It took me back a few years, I can tell you!
And while I was mentally reliving years gone by, I realised how relevant this song still is to us all today! Some things just never change!
I’m talking about a song called ‘I Whistle a Happy Tune’, written by the brilliant Rodgers & Hammerstein and sung by the British governess Mrs Anna Leonowens in the hit musical ‘The King And I’. The musical was based on the true experiences of Anna and this song explains how she dealt with her private fears when she found herself in new and strange surroundings.
She taught these techniques to her young son – and now I’m explaining them to you!
This is a song that was copyrighted way back in 1951 but, take a look at the lyrics below and you’ll see that it’s aimed well and truly at all of us anxiety sufferers!

It sums up exactly what I’m always telling anxiety sufferers:
That if you behave as if you are confident (even if you don’t feel it inside) then you’ll trick your brain into believing you really ARE confident.
That your body language is important to the way you feel and how people treat you. Stand tall (‘hold my head erect’) and be counted!
That if you use distraction techniques (the whistling of a tune or such like) you’ll take your mind off any scary thoughts you may be having.
That people can’t always tell you’re feeling anxious even if you’re convinced they can.
That appearances can be deceptive (striking the ‘careless pose’). Look cool and collected and that’s how people will see you.
That positive happy thoughts (‘the happiness in the tune’) can usually override negative ones and help to reduce your anxiety levels.
That always having a ‘little trick’ in reserve (like whistling a happy tune, for example, even if it’s just silently in your head!) is an excellent stand by to have for those times when you need some extra help.
And we all know what a difference any of the above things can make to help you in anxious situations!
Have a think about how you deal with scary situations. Do you have a ‘happy tune’ you can call upon? If not, maybe you might find it helpful. Who knows, maybe you might find that actually it’s THIS song that stays in your head, ready for when you need it most!
